Alex Kirst, a drummer was killed in a hit-and-run accident

Alex Kirst who was a drummer for the '80s/'90s glam rock band The Nymphs and later became a member of Iggy Pop's band after The Nymphs broke up, was killed in a hit-and-run accident in the desert outside Cathedral City, CA, reports the AP. He was 47 years old.

The local police tell the Palm Springs Desert Sun that the vehicle is a white 2000-06 Chevy Tahoe or GMC Yukon with damage to the passenger-side front hood, bumper, headlight and grill. The car struck Kirst the night of Thursday, Jan. 13. Someone spotted him lying on the side of the road and called the police, thinking the man was drunk.

"We have no evidence of any braking," Sgt. Paul Herrera tells the Desert Sun. "made no attempt to stop and fled the scene."

So sad. My condolence to his friends and family.

An extra dose of Dolly Parton to liven up '9 to 5: The Musical'

Dolly Parton
Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede, the long-running, patriotic dinner show located just outside the gates of Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., is filled with graceful horses, frenetic lumberjacks, covered wagons, vistas of the Old South, and even racing pigs. But after the chicken dinner has been picked clean, the apple crisps have been served and the North-South rivalries have been re-fought one more time, the show reaches for its emotional climax. Lights dim, the mood turns reverent, and the stentorian host draws everyone’s attention to just one flat spot in the massive arena. Suddenly, there she is. Dolly Parton herself.

The pilgrims are satisfied. The collective sigh of satisfaction is audible. Parton is not, of course, really there in person. That would be impossible even for the indefatigable star (who turns 65 years old Wednesday). The Dixie Stampede plays as many as 20 times per week in a mostly working-class town that loves Parton like no other (and has built an entire tourist economy on her image). And there are also sister Stampedes in Branson, Mo., and Myrtle Beach, SC.
Dolly Parton

No, Parton appears on a big video screen. But — and you really have to be there to feel the singularity of the moment — that does not seem to matter. People well understand Parton can't be everywhere at once. They just want to see her face. It legitimizes their whole evening. It is comforting.

When “9 to 5: The Musical,” the screen-to-stage Broadway musical closely based on the 1980 comedy starring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and, of course, Parton herself appeared on Broadway in 2009, the producers were faced with the Dixie Stampede problem. The movie — with its beloved title song about tumbling out of bed to face the quotidian drudgery of office work — is inextricably linked with Parton, who wrote all the music and lyrics in the score and whose personality imbues the entire show.

Yet Parton could not, for obvious reasons, be there in person. And whereas Parton's fans in Pigeon Forge might have been happy with a video, that was deemed a tad too tacky for Broadway.

Not any more. The show did not do so well on Broadway. And the national touring production of “9 to 5” features Parton herself. A lesson has been learned from the Dixie Stampede.

“We felt people really wanted to see Dolly,” said Mike Isaacson of Fox Theatricals, the lead producer of the show. And thus at the road version of “9 to 5: The Musical,” which opens in Chicago Wednesday night, Dolly they will see.

“I am the face of the clock.” said Parton, in a recent phone interview. “I talk about the 1970s over the vamp of ‘9 to 5.' I just like being able to welcome people to the show.”

A beloved figure in industry circles — where her hard work, humility, business smarts and multifarious creative talents are all widely respected — Parton is known for her hands-on involvement. Isaacson said Parton showed up for auditions for the tour, first terrifying the actresses who were called back and then putting them at ease.

“She'd just shout out ‘Hi, I'm Dolly,' said Isaacson, recreating the moment when Parton's hand rose and famous East Tennessee twang rang out through the rehearsal space.

“I've been working this ‘9 to 5' job for 30 years,” Patron said, explaining her presence. “I feel like I know these characters by heart.”
Dolly Parton

Parton, of course, is one of those artists whom people think they know but is, in fact, difficult to categorize. “I really don't consider this a country musical, “she said of “9 to 5.” “The only country song in it is ‘Backwoods Barbie.' Sure, there's a little Dolly flavor to all my music. But people had a preconceived notion that if I wrote it, it had to be country.”

Those were people, presumably, who were unaware that Whitney Houston's massive hit “I Will Always Love You” was penned and first recorded by Parton. Not only is country a malleable notion, but there is plenty of the big city in Parton.

The touring production, Parton says, has a “cozier feeling” that the Broadway prototype, which felt overblown and missing its roots. And the show, which is directed by Jeff Calhoun and now stars Dee Hoty, no longer has to worry about Broadway pundits. It is travelling to the heartland where it is more likely to reach its natural audience.

But if you talk to folks at the Dixie Stampede, and at Dollywood, they'll tell you that Dolly does show up quite regularly at those locales. She might not be able to be everywhere at once, but she knows how to choose her moments to appear in three dimensions.

Chicago is a high-profile city — a second opening, really for “9 to 5.” The Chicago Bears are currently sucking up a lot of oxygen in town and sometimes, video is not enough. Dolly Parton didn't get to be Dolly Parton without an innate sense of those moments.

And thus Wednesday night at the Bank of America, a red carpet will be rolled out in front of the theater. An American icon is expected to make her entrance and head backstage. And when the curtain rises, the welcome will be personal.

Teresa Scanlan wins as Nebraskan takes Miss America crown

Teresa Scanlan
A 17-year-old Nebraskan too young to cast a ballot has captured enough votes to win the Miss America crown, kickstarting her hopes of going to law school and eventually becoming a politician.

"I want to be there making sure that I stand up for what's right, stand up for integrity and honesty," Teresa Scanlan told The Associated Press on Saturday night after becoming the first Miss America from the Cornhusker State.

She won a $50,000 scholarship and a year's reign in one of the most visible positions any young woman could seek.

Scanlan captured the hearts of seven judges after a night of playing the piano, walking across a Las Vegas stage in a white gown and black bikini, and saying security trumps the public's right to knowledge when it comes to government leaks.

She said she'll register to vote as an independent after turning 18 next month, and work toward her goals by going to law school and perhaps becoming a prosecutor, then judge.

"At this point, attorneys and politicians are looked down on and have terrible reputations for being greedy and power hungry and I really think it's important for people who have their heart and mind in the right place get into those powerful positions," Scanlan told the AP.

"When I talk to kids my age, I don't find very many who are interested in that, because many are just turned off to the idea," she said. "I think it's important that we get a lot more of my generation willing to step up and go into those positions."

Scanlan beat out 52 beauty queens from other U.S. states, plus Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia. She said she was a bit worried after a preliminary interview with judges and hoped they would think a 17-year-old could do the job.
Teresa Scanlan

Clearly, they did.

"And I never passed up a cookie on my journey here," Scanlan said.

She's the youngest Miss America since the pageant implemented age limits in 1938. Rosemary LaPlanche was runner-up in 1940 and easily won the crown in 1941 despite being one month too young to compete, according to the pageant's website.

Scanlan said age didn't matter as the pageant celebrated its 90th birthday, though she thought her age might have made her an underdog.

"We were on an even playing field," she said. "From 17 to 24, that can be a huge age range. But with these girls, they are all at the highest level imaginable."

Miss Arkansas Alyse Eady won $25,000 as first runner-up, while Miss Hawaii Jalee Fuselier won $20,000 for third place.

Scanlan, a recent high school graduate from the western Nebraska town of Gering, planned to study American politics at Patrick Henry College in Virginia after her reign as Miss America. Scanlan said she planned to defer her university enrollment until she finishes her reign with the crown.

During the nationally televised pageant, Scanlan answered a question about Wikileaks by saying the United States should focus on security first.

"You know when it came to that situation, it was actually based on espionage, and when it comes to the security of our nation, we have to focus on security first and then people's right to know, because it's so important that everybody who's in our borders is safe and so we can't let things like that happen, and they must be handled properly," she said.

Scanlan said the question was easier for her than a generic one, because she has routinely discussed current events with her family since she was young.

The contestants — from every state plus the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico — started the show by dancing up the aisles while wearing silver cocktail dresses.

A panel of seven judges eyed them for looks and fitness. The competition included evening gown, talent and interview portions, with eliminations for 15 finalists, then 12, then 10, five and finally the winner along the way.

The judges had picked the three top finishers plus Miss Oklahoma Emoly West; Miss Texas Ashley Melnick; Miss Rhode Island Deborah Saint-Vil; Miss Utah Christina Lowe; Miss Washington Jacquie Brown; Miss Arizona Kathryn Bulkley; Miss Virginia Caitlin Uze, and Miss California Arianna Afsar.

Fans voted in Miss New York Claire Buffie and Miss Delaware Kayla Martell.

And in a first-ever twist for the contest, the young women picked two finalists themselves, Miss Kentucky Djuan Trent and Miss Oregon Stephenie Denise Steers.

In her introduction to the audience, Bulkley dedicated her performance to U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head last week in Tucson. Bulkley called Giffords her mentor.

The Miss America Organization bills itself as the country's largest scholarship provider for women, with $349,000 in prizes given this year at the national level.

Teresa Scanlan, Miss America was crowned last night

Teresa Scanlan
A new Miss America was crowned last night -- and she's got some harsh words for Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

Teresa Scanlan, a 17-year-old from Nebraska, was asked during the question portion of the pageant what her thoughts were about Wikileaks.

"You know when it came to that situation," Scanlan reasoned, "it was actually based on espionage, and when it comes to the security of our nation, we have to focus on security first and then people's right to know.

"It's important that everybody who's in our borders is safe and so we can't let things like that happen, and they must be handled properly."

Scanlan is the youngest winner since the pageant's first competition in 1921, when Margaret Gorman won at age 15.

Helen Hunt Exclusive!

Helen Hunt
Sure, we’ve always been mad about Helen Hunt, but since Mad About You hung up its humor, Hunt took her four Emmy Awards and has meticulously laid out a film career that has shared one aspect: Quality over quantity.

Helen Hunt scored an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her role opposite Jack Nicholson in As Good as It Gets in 1997.

In 2000, she appeared in three fantastic films: Robert Altman’s Dr. T and the Women starring Richard Gere, Pay It Forward with Kevin Spacey and What Women Want with Mel Gibson.

The year 2004 saw her in A Good Woman and then Hunt made her directorial debut in 2008 with Then She Found Me, based on the book by Elinor Lipman.

In Every Day, Hunt portrays Jeannie, the wife of Liev Schreiber’s Ned, who together portray a married couple dealing with the challenges of life.

Whether it’s Jeannie’s crass elderly father moving in or the fact that their teenage son just came out as gay -- Ned and Jeannie’s marriage is under stress to say the least.

But, in the hands of an actress of Hunt’s mettle, Jeannie emits a quiet power that gives Every Day its heart.

The movie offers continue to come in for Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus
First, her mother reportedly optioned the rights for a music video to be made into a feature-length film.

Now, the screenwriter behind Disturbia and Paranormal Activity 2 has said in a new interview that he hopes to work with Cyrus on "Wake," a big screen version of Lisa McMann's book series.

"It's sort of a vehicle for Miley Cyrus," Landon says. "She is looking to sort of get out of her cutesy Hannah Montana image... She wanted to do something a little edgier and a little darker, so we're making this movie hopefully... It's about a teenage girl who has a rare form of narcalepsy. When she's within a certain distance of someone sleeping, she passes out and goes into their dreams."

Landon says there's "definitely a spooky element to it."

Cyrus has made it clear she hopes to be taken seriously as a movie actress. She just finished filming LOL with Demi Moore and Ashley Greene.

John Travolta, Kelly Preston Show Off Son

John Travolta
The celebrity baby birth everyone was hoping would go off without a hitch thankfully did last fall, and now John Travolta and Kelly Preston are showing off the cute fruit of her (most likely silent) labor.

Just shy of his two-month birthday, little Ben—born Nov. 23—is making his cover debut on not one but two magazines this week (People and Hello!), alongside his beaming parents.

"He's brought us a new beginning," John and Kelly told People, referring to the little tyke as their "miracle."

"He's given the house a renewed sense and purpose," 56-year-old papa John added.

He further exclaimed their happiness to Hello!, saying, "For us it's been uplifting. Especially when he smiles at me and seems contented in my arms."

As for the birth, it did indeed go smoothly, with Travolta holding the 48-year-old Preston's hand throughout the whole of her labor.

The couple's daughter, 10-year-old Ella Bleu, was also present, albeit outside the delivery room. She was being watched over by the family's close pal Kirstie Alley, who was also present for the occasion.

The duo also shared adorable details of their new lives in Ocala, saying their days and nights are now filled with multiple readings of Good Night, Gorilla and dad crooning one of his favorite lullabies, "A Bushel and a Peck."

However, both parents told People that the best moment from little Ben's life so far has been sharing his first smile. Awww. Um, is that some dust in your eye? Yeah, ours, too.

Princess-to-be Kate Middleton celebrated turning 29 on Sunday

Kate Middleton
Princess-to-be Kate Middleton celebrated turning 29 on Sunday, her last birthday as a commoner before her wedding in April to Prince William.

Clarence House refused to give any details of how Middleton would mark her big day, saying only that she was spending it "privately."

Media said that Kate -- who is five months older than her royal fiance -- was expected to enjoy low-key festivities with her family and friends as she prepares for her April 29 nuptials.

"She will probably want to keep a low profile because the rest of her life will be high profile," said Ingrid Seward, editor of Majesty magazine, a publication focusing on the royal family.

"There are a lot of parties coming up so she might just want some really, really close friends and family with her -- or it could be just her and William."

Prince William, who met Kate while they were university students eight years ago, is serving as a Royal Air Force search and rescue helicopter pilot in Anglesey, Wales.

But the couple were seen in public on Saturday at the wedding of one of William's friends, with Kate sporting a tailored black velvet coat, a black dress with a plunging sheer neckline and a jaunty black beret.

William was an usher for the wedding in the northern village of Boroughbridge of Harry Aubrey-Fletcher, a schoolmate from the prince's time at Eton, and Louise Stourton.

Kate's appearance whipped up the usual press frenzy, with the Mail on Sunday saying Middleton looked "thinner than usual" and adding: "Hope you won't wear black on April 29, Kate!"

The News of the World focused instead on whether or not the future queen was wearing a bra.

William and Kate earlier this week released new details of the plans for their wedding at London's Westminster Abbey, including that they would be married by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams.

They will also make a procession in a horse-drawn carriage through some of the capital's most historic sites after they have tied the knot.
